ECG changes generally do not manifest until there is a moderate degree of hypokalaemia (2.5-2.9 mmol/L). The earliest ECG manifestation of hypokalaemia is a decrease in T wave amplitude. WebThis is because low levels of potassium can cause the heart cells to become more excitable, leading to faster or irregular heartbeats. In severe cases, hypokalemia can even result in cardiac arrest or sudden death. Hypokalemia can also affect the way the heart muscle contracts, leading to weaker contractions and reduced cardiac output.
