In a 2024 survey by the Police Executive Research Forum, law enforcement agencies reported an 18% increase in resignations and a 45% increase in retirements compared to the previous year. WebCurrent Study Stereotype threat within police officers has been argued to promote excessive police violence via its effects on the self-legitimacy of police officers (Richardson & Goff, 2014). We provide the first empirical test of the mechanism linking stereotype threat to coercive policing using survey data from an urban police department.
