WebFeb 9, 2024 · Woodbury Castle, a hillfort in Devon, dates back to about 500 to 300BC and is situated on a high point of Woodbury Common. Today a road runs through the middle of the earthwork ramparts. English Heritage improved the access in about 2009 and there are now steps up the steep rampart to be able to enter the hill fort without slipping. The hill fort is known, in archaeological circles, as Cadbury-Congresbury in order to differentiate it from the Cadbury Castle hillfort in South Cadbury. It appears to have been constructed in the Iron Age when one or more ramparts, with walls and ditches, were built on the steep slopes of the hill to defend an area covering some eight and a half acres.
